On Soul Music, by Terry Pratchett, Some Thoughts.

I am not doing any formal course, just writing for pleasure in later life. I have made the link between this book and some of the current affairs headlines at the time (especially the Romanian orphanages, and a BBC documentary about Boarding School Syndrome), my own interests in this area as a former residential social worker, and as a childhood reader of so-called girls novels. Sadly the only fantasy I came across as a young reader was Tolkien. Times have moved on. Better late than never.

Back to the Discworld for a new reading I, like so many, have been touched by details of character or story which youth and enthusiasm missed, so keen were we for the meat of the action. Returning to these books is like taking on foot, roads formerly dashed down by car. My overriding impression is that Pratchett is first and foremost a comedian, willing to sacrifice consistency for the gag, for the flow of the story. Ditto in his public persona. Watching interviews with him he frequently goes for laughs. It seems he may well have been like that behind the scenes too. I heard Marc Burrows, an unofficial biographer, interviewed on a podcast (now un-refindable of course). He recounted that part of his decision to write the book was due to his disappointment at having narrowly missed an opportunity to meet Pratchett. Soul Music, Susan Orphan Hero

  huge popularisation of the orphan trope. The hero thing seems to be quite a thing. It could be coincidence how closely TP sticks to it, but I'm more or less certain that what with the circles he mixed in and how well read he was, that he'd know of Campbell's work even if he didn't deliberately use it then invert it, subvert it and do his usual Pratchett thing on it. I would beg to differ with him about her as a hero. I think TP is throwing sand in our eyes by making her an annoyingly arrogant teenager whose favourite word is stupid (occurs 26 times in the book, sadly I counted them, though TP's careful to echo it in othe people's voices not just hers) so she doesn't seem like a typical hero, more like an opposite of what anyone would picture. No glamour, though she rather fancies herself in black lace lol I'm glad she doesn't change too much and turn nice.
